Email Scams

Members of the public are being contacted by persons via email purporting to be relatives or friends marooned overseas who have exhausted their finances or have had their monies stolen. These persons then request urgent financial assistance from their relative or friend and ask that monies are forwarded to them. Some members of the public have forwarded money to these persons under the mistaken impression that they are providing assistance to the relative or friend in need only to discover subsequently that the relative or friend is not marooned overseas in need of assistance.
The FIU advises members of the public to take all necessary steps to ascertain whether the individual contacting them for financial assistance is indeed their relative or friend. The public should also ascertain whether the individual or entity is in fact in need of financial assistance.
